Why use Silkline with ION?

Every manufacturing process starts with receiving inventory. But that inventory's journey starts long before it arrives at the factory. Silkline augments ION's native purchasing functionality to bring best-in-class supply chain management capabilities to ION's customers, helping advanced hardware manufacturers save money, move faster, and reduce risk.

Is Silkline a fit for me?

How Silkline’s ION integration works

Silkline's advanced integration architecture allows for reliable and fast two-way syncing with ION. The integration uses two types of sync methods:

• Persistent sync – Full sync of data on a regular interval, typically every 15 minutes

• Event-based sync – Sync of specific objects at the time of an event:

  • Creating or editing a Purchase Order

  • Creating or editing a Part

  • Creating or editing a Supplier'

The following diagram shows how data flows between ION and Silkline. Additional master data, such as currencies, quality clauses, units of measure, and terms, are also synced.

Silkline’s sync from ION is both persistent and event-based. Silkline’s sync to ION is event-based. This allows users to edit data in both systems seamlessly while avoiding conflicts.

For event-based syncs, updated data in one system will be reflected in the other in about 15 seconds.

Source of Truth

Silkline integrates with ION through a two-way sync, enabling users to work seamlessly across both systems. For example, actions like creating a part can be done in either platform.

However, since ION and Silkline capture different levels of detail for certain records, we recommend designating one system as the primary source for each data model. The following overview chart shows how data models overlap between Silkline and ION, and our recommendations for which is primary:

Setup

Self-service setup is not yet available and requires configuration by the Silkline team. Please contact [e-mail] for assistance with setup.

Create a Role

• Navigate to the Roles page in ION and click the “Create role” button

• Enter a descriptive name for the role, such as “Silkline”.

• Select all the required permissions.

Create a Service User

A service user is required to support bi-directional syncing between Silkline and ION. Please contact us if this is an issue for your team.

• Navigate to the Invitations page in ION

• Click “Invite members”.

• Add new user to invite

  • Enter a valid email address within your organization

    We recommend creating a new, memorable user, like silkline@<my-domain>.com

  • Click “Send invitations”.

  • Accept the user invitation and set the password

  • Share the username/password with the Silkline team via a secure communication channel.

Assign the Role to the Service User

• Once the user is created, navigate to the Users page in ION and assign the newly created service user’s role to the role you created in Step 1 above.

Create an API Key

• Login as the service user

• Follow the ION instructions for generating an API Key

• Send the clientId and clientSecret to your Silkline point of contact using a password manager or secure sharing method (BitWarden, 1Password, Keeper, etc.)
